i bought some 3mm neowedge SMD LED twist locks from superbrightleds.com

https://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-bin/store/commerce.cgi?product=CAR&cart_id=8902166.25629&next=50#NEOb-x

this is what they look like:

the reason i bought these is because they already have the resistors wired in, plus SMD's are brighter and have better light spread (less hot-spotting). then i transfered the LED's to the original twist lock bases and plugged them in.

here's a write up that i sort of followed:
http://www.pexcom.com.au/z32cms/e107_images/LED-Conversion.pdf

note: the smd's are glued to the top of their original bases so i used a pair of needle nose pliers to gently crack the glue and pull them out.
